The real reason Chuck Grassley is doing what he’s doing to Donald Trump today

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. Earlier today Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski stated that she agrees with General Mattis’ assessment that Donald Trump is unfit and deranged, and that she may not support Trump in November. Now we’re seeing Republican Senator Chuck Grassley taking action of his own against Trump, placing a hold on two Trump nominees.

As always, it must be stressed that these Republican Senators are not doing this because it’s the “right thing” or because they’ve suddenly “grown a spine.” Those concepts don’t exist in the Republican world. These types are always going to simply do whatever they selfishly think is best for their own career and their own political ambition.

They’ve protected Trump up until now, because they thought it was in their own personal best interest. But now Trump’s poll numbers are collapsing, and his odds of reelection are becoming more remote, and military and religious leaders are starting to turn against Trump. Opportunists like Grassley and Murkowski see more opportunity for advantage by sticking it to Trump than by siding with him.

Their actions are far too little, too late to redeem themselves – but that’s never what this has been about. Think of these types of Republican Senators as reliable barometers for which way the wind is going to end up blowing. They’re not willing to finish Trump off themselves, because it’s not in their nature. But as these rats start heading in the direction of the exit ramp for Trump’s sinking ship, it’s a signal that his ship is indeed sinking. Now is the time for people like us to pile on.
