Chink in the armor
It might surprise some of you to learn that Will Hurd is running for president – and a lot of you may follow up hearing that bit of news by asking who he is – or was. For a short time, he was a Republican congressman from southern Texas, a part of the state that shared a border with Mexico, and he occasionally said things that sounded reasonable.
Unfortunately, too many of his moves were fairly predictable for a Republican. Like the worst of them, he regularly folded to party leadership, even refusing to impeach Donald Trump for extorting Ukraine when it came to a vote in early 2020, voting no on both articles.
Now that Hurd is no longer in a position of power, having chosen not to run for re-election in 2020, he’s finally telling the truth about Donald Trump. At a rally, he declared Donald Trump isn’t running for president to make America great again – he’s running to avoid prison. While this is totally accurate, it’s too little too late from Hurd, and it scored him absolutely zero political points, as he was met with only loud boos at a presidential rally.
It’s the same fate that befell Chris Christie, the last Republican who dared speak out against the former guy. Let it be said that the GOP is a place where you get rewarded for doing the wrong thing – and whatever the reward is, it’s never worth it in the end. That’s why whoever their nominee is in 2024 will be terrible and why we must work to re-elect President Biden and the Democrats.
