Donald Trump can’t accept that he’s lost, tries to plunge the 2020 census into chaos
Earlier today, the Donald Trump administration made the surprise announcement that it was printing up the 2020 census without the controversial citizenship question, because it had run out of time to try to revise its legal case and get the Supreme Court’s approval. Even though the Trump regime is admitting defeat, Trump is apparently too far removed from reality to accept this, so now he’s trying to plunge the entire thing into chaos.
Donald Trump posted this tantrum late tonight: “A very sad time for America when the Supreme Court of the United States won’t allow a question of “Is this person a Citizen of the United States?” to be asked on the #2020 Census! Going on for a long time. I have asked the Department of Commerce and the Department of Justice to do whatever is necessary to bring this most vital of questions, and this very important case, to a successful conclusion. USA! USA! USA!”
It’s not clear what Trump is even demanding here, let alone what could be done at this point. He seems to be under the belief that his regime can redo its legal case, go before the Supreme Court again, and complete the entire process in time to begin the 2020 census as scheduled. Or perhaps he’s talking about delaying the census, as he hinted at a few days ago. The thing is, none of these things are realistic possibilities.
We’ll see what, if anything, Donald Trump’s Justice and Commerce Departments might try to do in the name of honoring Trump’s incoherent demand. They’ve clearly already decided that it simply isn’t possible, and that’s unlikely to change just because Trump is throwing a tantrum about having lost.
