Donald Trump’s ‘caravan of drugs’ meltdown goes even further off the rails

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

For the past several days, Donald Trump has been frantically obsessed with a “big Caravan of People from Honduras” which in his mind is full of criminals, or drugs, or criminals full of drugs. We’re honestly not sure what he’s talking about, because neither is he. But the good news, as it were, is that Trump has now decided the ‘caravan of drugs’ crisis is suddenly over with. No, really.

The trouble began when Trump apparently misunderstood a dishonestly reported Fox News story about a group of refugees in Honduras who were hoping to find their way into the United States via Mexico. On April 2nd, Trump posted this confused tweet: “Honduras, Mexico and many other countries that the U.S. is very generous to, sends many of their people to our country through our WEAK IMMIGRATION POLICIES. Caravans are heading here. Must pass tough laws and build the WALL. Democrats allow open borders, drugs and crime!” But that was merely the beginning of his growing focus on the matter.

By April 3rd, Donald Trump had become really concerned about the issue. He tweeted “The big Caravan of People from Honduras, now coming across Mexico and heading to our “Weak Laws” Border, had better be stopped before it gets there. Cash cow NAFTA is in play, as is foreign aid to Honduras and the countries that allow this to happen. Congress MUST ACT NOW!” By April 4th, Trump had signed an order which appeared to dispatch the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border, in an apparent attempt to stop the caravan. Palmer Report fact checked what Trump signed, and it turned out he didn’t actually dispatch the National Guard; he simply authorized states to do so.

But by April 5th, the caravan crisis that only existed in Donald Trump’s head had somehow magically resolved itself. He tweeted “The Caravan is largely broken up thanks to the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them so as not to cause a giant scene at our Border. Because of the Trump Administrations actions, Border crossings are at a still UNACCEPTABLE 46 year low.” Then he added “Stop drugs!” That’s also our advice to Donald Trump: stop doing drugs!
