Donald Trump can’t stop Robert Mueller now
Now that a seat is opening up on the Supreme Court, some folks think that Donald Trump is going not magically get away with his crimes in the Trump-Russia scandal. However, these two storylines have little to do with each other. Even as the Supreme Court nomination fight shapes up to be one of the fiercest battles in modern American political history, Special Counsel Robert Mueller is closing in on Trump more aggressively than ever – and even Trump knows it.
This morning Trump woke up and tweeted a whiny, defeated-sounding rant about Mueller’s investigation. The timing stands out. Clearly, Trump doesn’t think that these Supreme Court developments are going to get him off the hook, or he wouldn’t be so obsessively worried about what Mueller is doing. That’s because he knows that we’re now just a few weeks away from the start of the Paul Manafort trial, which Mueller is already preparing to use as a trial of Trump by proxy. There’s more.
This comes even as Mueller’s grand jury against Trump’s oldest friend Roger Stone ramps up to completion, and Trump’s fixer Micheal Cohen comes closer to a plea deal. Mueller will also file papers tomorrow about whether he’s ready to send Michael Flynn to prison or whether he intends to keep using Flynn as a witness for awhile longer, a timely reminder that Flynn already cut a plea deal and turned over evidence against Trump last year.
If Donald Trump had any solution for stopping Robert Mueller, he’d have done it by now, instead of continuing to obsessively whine about it. Even with the Supreme Court now in play, Trump still sounds completely lost when it comes to the Trump-Russia investigation. If he were going to try the pardon route, he would have needed to do it last year, before his own people started turning over evidence against him. Firing Mueller has never been a realistic scenario. Trump can’t stop Mueller now. All he can do is whine, as Mueller proceeds to carve him up.
