Donald Trump hits the panic button at Camp David

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Yesterday, Donald Trump and his Republican allies were spinning a narrative about how impeachment was going great for Trump, the GOP Senate was going to magically make Trump’s impeachment troubles go away, and then they were all going out for ice cream or something. Now it’s becoming clear that this narrative was nothing more than a bluff.

Donald Trump is so concerned about his Senate impeachment trial, he’s opened up Camp David into what the Washington Post is calling an “adult playground” where he’s trying to woo Republican Senators into not convicting him. To be clear, this is not something you do if you think you have it in the bag. It’s what you do when you’re panicking.

If you want more evidence that Trump is worried about his current position, consider that he just dispatched his mentally incompetent lapdog Lindsey Graham to launch a sham Senate investigation into Joe Biden. This is a risky move that has very little chance of winning Trump a single additional vote in 2020, and a very high chance of backfiring on Trump and costing him votes. But it’s the kind of desperate last ditch move you try after you’ve completely run out of viable ideas.

In the end, the Republican Senators will end up selfishly doing whatever they think is best for their own personal odds of reelection. Whether that means saving Trump, or ousting Trump, will depend on where the impeachment poll numbers are by the time the trial happens. That could still be months away, so it’s absurd to presume that anyone knows how the Senate trial will play out. In the meantime, Trump is (correctly) worried enough to hit the panic button on impeachment.
