Bridge Over Troubled Waters was one of my mother’s favorite songs, and I also adore its beauty. Right now, my friends, our political lives are a bit of a bridge over troubled waters. But we have the power to make those waters a bit less troubled, a bit more calm. How? We can use our political capital—and we’ve got it. There are many things we can do to help ourselves and the Democratic party.

First off, we need to let people know every crappy Republican decision that comes down the pike—no sitting on the sidelines while they try their damnedest to ruin our beloved country. The Matt Gaetz fiasco has already turned into a scandal, and there will be plenty more where that came from.

Second, we must not use our voices in FEAR of Donald Trump. We must, as Bill Palmer told us to do, MOCK him, mock him as the loser and traitor that he is, we must mock all those who live in servitude to him, we must bring back the weird” line coined by Tim Walz, we must show people the absolute lunacy of the GOP.

We can also all get involved by calling our senators and congresspeople. For example, there will be several people in the GOP who WILL want to bypass confirmation hearings; they will want to do this because they are losers and because they are scared of the Donald. We can write and call our congresspeople and tell them we NEED confirmation hearings. This is the time to act. Even if you have a blue Senator in a blue state, you can still make your voice heard.

So yes, the Democratic Party will be a check on Republican negligence, and we will be there to use our activism in places where it is needed.

While the waters are troubled today, please remember that politics can turn on a dime. What’s a rough high tide today can be a gentle lapping low tide tomorrow. That can happen, and it will happen with a bit of help from us.
