George Santos has been expelled from the House and is awaiting criminal trial, which will send him to prison for several years if he’s convicted. But because Santos has no shame, he’s now running for Congress again while awaiting trial. However, Santos is now bailing on the Republican Party.

Santos has announced that he’s quitting the GOP because all it does is lose. Santos will now apparently be running as an Independent in New York’s conservative 1st House District in November. So what’s he really up to?

Santos is clearly only “running” for office as an excuse to raise money and move it around. If Santos were to run as a Republican, he’d lose the primary race and then be out of the race. But by running as an Independent, Santos will be able to remain in the race all the way to November. He still has zero chance of winning, but that’s not the point.

What will be interesting is whether Santos can pick off just enough right wing votes in NY-01 to make the race close. As of now, NY-01 is rated “Likely Republican” and isn’t projected to be competitive. But if Santos were to get perhaps five percent of the vote, and took it all from the Republican candidate, that could indeed shake things up.
