How Stephen Miller blew it

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

If you’re the last man standing on a sinking ship, your priority has to be figuring out how to stop the ship from sinking, not steering it toward your fantasy island. All-time loser Stephen Miller had a chance to wield real influence over Donald Trump’s failing White House when everyone else resigned and he became basically the only senior adviser Trump had left. But Miller just couldn’t help himself – and he blew it.

We now know that sometime around April, Stephen Miller became the primary voice in Donald Trump’s ear. In fact Miller had Trump on such a string, he managed to convince Trump to begin separating Hispanic immigrants from their kids, and tossing those kids in concentration camps. This isn’t a surprise, considering that Miller is an outspoken anti-immigrant white supremacist. But not only was this horrifyingly evil, it was really bad strategy.

Miller has promptly backed Trump into a corner, because the whole nation just decided that these immigrant kids are the nation’s number one priority. The only way Trump can get out of this corner is to dump Miller’s policy, and maybe even dump Miller in the process. Democrats and Republicans in Congress see Miller as the primary obstacle to resolving this crisis – and we’ve all seen how willing Trump is to shove his own people out the back door in order to survive another week on the job.

All that Stephen Miller had to do was to help steer Donald Trump toward a minor “win” here and there on safe and easy issues. If Miller could have somehow righted Trump’s ship, then maybe the Trump administration would have been in a powerful enough position to get away with embarking on this kind of truly evil stuff. Instead, like a racist moth to an all-white flame, Miller bit off more than he could chew, and has promptly screwed himself out of the position of influence he’d always been coveting.
