Robert Mueller just made a big move, and Donald Trump has been stunned into silence
It’s exceedingly rare for Donald Trump to skip his traditional pre-dawn Twitter meltdown. When it does occasionally happen, it’s even more rare that he doesn’t try to make up for it with a midday tweet explosion. So Trump’s absence from Twitter today, which now extends back twenty hours with the exception of a single “Thank you Cleveland” post which was clearly done by his staff, is significant. It’s typically a sign that something has stunned him into scared silence. This comes after Robert Mueller made a big move that cuts close to home.
Businessman Tom Barrack is the closest thing that Donald Trump has to a personal friend. Barrack has been a close informal adviser to Trump throughout his foray into politics, and is in position to know most or all of his political secrets. Think about how loose lipped Trump can be in public, then multiply that by an order of magnitude when he’s in private with people he trusts, and you’ll get an idea of just how much Barrack knows about Trump’s activities.
So it’s a big deal that Special Counsel Robert Mueller just interviewed Tom Barrack, according to the Associated Press. It’s an even bigger deal that Mueller’s questions for Barrack focused on Paul Manafort’s coordination with Russia on behalf of the campaign, and financial matters involving the campaign. Barrack is a successful businessman with no known criminal record of any sort. So even if he does have loyalty to Trump, he sounds like the kind of guy who wouldn’t be dumb enough to risk lying to Mueller on Trump’s behalf.
In other words, Robert Mueller probably just gained his most important cooperating witness to date when it comes to Donald Trump and his campaign conspiring with Russia to rig the election. This also sounds like Mueller is investigating how the Trump campaign got money from Russia or through other illegal means. No wonder Donald Trump has been stunned into silence. He’ll eventually snap out of it and start tweeting again. But for now it’s a pretty clear giveaway that Trump is worried about what Barrack just gave up.
