On Friday, Donald Trump told House Republicans on a conference call that he didn’t even want to call the President of Ukraine, and that Rick Perry forced him to do it, because Perry wanted Trump to push something involving a gas plant. This led to the question: what gas plant? It appears to have set a chain of events in motion that’s blown the lid off a Trump-Giuliani scheme to extort money out of a Ukraine gas company.

Just one day after Donald Trump blurted out the “gas” aspect of his Ukraine scandal, Politico reported that Rick Perry had indeed tried to force a Ukraine gas company to hire his buddies from Texas. Then on Sunday, the AP reported that several Trump associates have been trying to force a Ukraine gas company to steer vast sums of money in their direction, all of them name checking Rudy Giuliani while doing so.

Trump was clearly trying to scapegoat Rick Perry for the Ukraine political scandal, which made some sense considering that Perry was allegedly in on it, and Perry had just revealed that he was planning to resign and cooperate with the House impeachment inquiry. But because Trump screwed up and said something about a gas company in the process of throwing Perry under the bus, it looks like he unwittingly tipped off the media to start digging in the right direction – and they’ve hit paydirt.

Donald Trump has been slipping for awhile and everyone knows it. The same is true with Rudy Giuliani. The trouble with a vast criminal conspiracy like the Trump-Rudy-Ukraine mess is that the two ringleaders keep opening their big mouths and giving away some of the most crucial pieces of the puzzle. Now their Ukraine scandal isn’t just about abuse of power, which a lot of Americans are already understanding full well. It’s about stealing money, which everyone understands is a crime.
