Even as the first post-debate national polls show that the 2024 presidential race is as close as it was before the debate, we all know that presidential elections come down to a handful of key swing states. One of them is Nevada – and Joe Biden just got a big boost there.

Democrats have been outperforming expectations in pretty much every election in 2022, 2023, and early 2024. Democrats have been outperforming by an even larger margin whenever an abortion referendum has happened to be on the ballot at the same time. It’s not difficult to figure out why, given that sixty-something percent of Americans favor some degree of abortion rights. Such referendums drive turnout, and that turnout ends up boosting the Democratic candidates who are up for election that same day.

So it’s a big deal that Nevada has now obtained enough signatures to put a state constitutional amendment referendum on the ballot this November. This move will undoubtedly help drive turnout for the Democrats in Nevada. This is important both for the presidential election and the U.S. Senate majority, given that Nevada is going to be one of the closest Senate races in the nation.
