As the investigation into his Trump-Russia scandal inches ever closer to taking him down, Donald Trump doesn’t have anything remotely resembling a gameplan for surviving it. In fact Trump no longer even seems to understand how the game works, or what his own position is, or why he’s been boxed in by Russia. A pair of new stories about Trump’s reactions to the Russia scandal reveal that he’s gone completely bonkers about it.

For the sake of appearances, Trump’s advisers have managed to talk him into signing off on some minor anti-Russia stances, so they can go out and spin these moves as proof that Trump isn’t Putin’s puppet. But Trump is so perturbed by it, he’s told staffers they’re not even allowed to mention the moves in public. Trump is just that bothered by the fact that he had to go against Putin a little bit. And yet this comes on the heels of another even more bizarre, yet conflicting story about Trump and Putin.

During a recent phone call, Trump reportedly told Putin off about Russia’s increasing military aggression. According to NBC News Trump said to Putin, “If you want to have an arms race we can do that, but I’ll win.” This is profoundly, even shockingly, out of character when it comes to Trump’s consistent cowering fear of Putin. We all know it’s because Putin is holding blackmail material over Trump.

So has Donald Trump so thoroughly lost his marbles that he’s now snapping at his master Vladimir Putin, or is this entire story merely something that his aides fabricated and fed to the media in the hope of making Trump look like he’s not a Russian puppet? We’re not sure. But either Trump is now threatening Putin to his face, or his handlers are making up phony conversations between him and Putin, even as Trump has told them they’re not allowed to mention Russia in public. One way or the other, this is berserk.
