Donald Trump goes berserk as GOP Senators prepare to throw him under the bus
Yesterday Palmer Report explained that Donald Trump had a whole new problem on his hands. A group of Republican Senators reportedly decided they could no longer stand by Trump’s phony story about there having been no quid pro quo, so they were going to fall back to the position of acknowledging the quid pro quo while making the (weak) argument that it wasn’t necessarily illegal.
We pointed out that this was going to be a problem for Trump because he and house House Republican allies have already put down a lot of their chips on the “perfect phone call” defense, and because Trump stubbornly won’t want to admit that he did anything that might have even sorta kinda been wrong. Sure enough, tonight Trump went berserk on Twitter about the story:
“False stories are being reported that a few Republican Senators are saying that President Trump may have done a quid pro quo, but it doesn’t matter, there is nothing wrong with that, it is not an impeachable event. Perhaps so, but read the transcript, there is no quid pro quo!”
You see Donald Trump’s problem here. Senate Republicans are going to selfishly do whatever they think is best for themselves and their own personal odds of getting reelected, not simply what’s best for Trump. They’re going to throw him under the bus by acknowledging the quid pro quo, whether Trump is willing to get on board or not. Trump’s tweet suggests that he’s clinically incapable of getting on board with it.
