Bernie Sanders is on his last legs
At this stage of a primary race, if you’re behind in the current delegate count, then you’d better be ahead in the upcoming states. Or you’d better be ahead in the national polls, which include all the states that haven’t voted yet. The trouble for Bernie Sanders is that he’s behind in current delegates and he’s behind in the polls. Now it’s just gotten even uglier for him.
Over the weekend a new poll from Morning Consult – the first national poll with Elizabeth Warren out of the race – had Joe Biden ahead by sixteen points over Sanders. If there was any concern that this poll might have been an outlier, a new CNN poll released this morning shows Biden having the same sixteen point lead nationwide. In other words, it’s now fairly clear that Warren’s exit from the race hasn’t helped Sanders at all.
The primary race is now heading into “Mini Super Tuesday” with several states voting tomorrow. The four largest are Michigan, where Biden recently surged into a fairly large lead; Washington State, where Biden has climbed into a very slight lead; and Mississippi and Missouri, where Biden is ahead by almost comical blowout proportions.
If tomorrow’s voting ends up being anything like what the polls are saying, Sanders will be down to his last swing. With Biden set to score a major blowout win in Florida next Tuesday, this primary race could be all but over within eight days. But as always, turnout is key. Polls don’t cast votes; people do.
