Ben Sasse just found a whole new way to embarrass himself
“I was just following orders.” These words above have been uttered by countless people — accessories to crimes, criminals themselves. “I was just following orders.” It is a continuous on-grid whine, a live-wire for refusal to take responsibility for one’s actions.
People who use this excuse annoy me to no end. Nor do I buy into their immature attempts to rationalize away their own spineless behavior. Courage requires maturity, and it requires common sense. But cowardice only requires weakness.
And we still hear this excuse today. We hear it from insurrectionists. “I was only doing what he TOLD me to do some cry out.” Like they did not have choices. Will we hear that from Senators who turn away from voting “yes” on the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson?
Will they admit the truth? That many of them will vote against her because they are “just following orders?” Mitch McConnell’s orders, perhaps. Or orders from their base Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse has announced he is a no vote.
However, in an attempt to suck up to our side, in the hopes we will forget his actions when he inevitably runs for President, he included these bizarre words in his statement: “Judge Jackson is an extraordinary person with an extraordinary American story. We both love this country, but we disagree on judicial philosophy, and I am sadly unable to vote for this confirmation.”
It’s been long rumored Sasse wants to run for President. That very well might be. But he has, with this utterly ridiculous statement, blown any chance he has in that regard.
One cannot win the Presidency without the black vote. People of color — Black, Native American, Hispanic — are increasing in our country, much to the horror of folks like Tucker Carlson. And as such, they have strong voices in how our country is run. And no way will many of them accept these childish words from Sasse.
A REAL leader — a possible Presidential leader — would vote yes anyway, recognizing that though this leader might disagree on policy, there stands before him a constellation, a brilliant and gifted Judge who will make an outstanding Supreme Court Justice.
To sum up, folks like Sasse are not that different from the “I am just following orders” crowd. Sasse and his ilk lacks courage and grit, qualities any real leader must have. And they will not be allowed to forget their own cowardice.
