Any publicity is good publicity, we suppose, if your goal is to sell a new album or a controversial book. Maybe that old adage holds up in the public relations realm and maybe it doesn’t. But you know where that strategy falls apart? Political scandals. And you know where that strategy absolutely destroys you? Criminal scandals. Yet, at the end of the worst week anyone has had in a long time, Rudy Giuliani is finally admitting that this really is about attention.

Giuliani has spent the week confessing that Donald Trump committed several felonies. He’s done the kind of damage that’s ruined what was left of Michael Cohen’s life, and has sped up the demise of Donald Trump’s presidency. Rudy has been such a disaster for his own side, the only question left is whether he’s mentally incompetent or he’s trying to take Trump down on purpose. So what does Rudy have to say about it all?

Here’s what Giuliani is telling the Washington Post at the end of his Disaster Week: “Everybody’s reacting to us now, and I feel good about that because that’s what I came in to do.” Wait, you came in to do what? You’re pleased that everyone is now more focused on Trump’s criminal behavior? This is what you call a win? This isn’t the Apprentice. Political scandals aren’t won or lost based on how big the television ratings are for the surrogates on each side. More importantly, criminal scandals aren’t won that way either.

It’s up to you whether you think Rudy Giuliani is blowing this for Donald Trump because he’s trying to hurry up and get Trump ousted before the criminal investigations can circle back to him, or because Rudy’s brain simply fell out. But now we know that Trump is letting Rudy take a blowtorch to him because Trump thinks he’s still running a reality show.
