Another House Republican just quit
When House Republican Ken Buck announced earlier this month that he was abruptly resigning, he said that the real danger for Republicans was that more House members were likely to resign soon as well. It looks like Buck knew what he was talking about, because another of his colleagues is also quitting.
House Republican Mike Gallagher is now resigning, according to multiple major news outlets. His resignation will officially go into effect on April 19th. So what does this do to the collapsing House Republican majority?
Gallagher’s resignation is yet another vacancy in the kind of far right House district where the Republicans will near-automatically keep the seat in any special election. So the majority math becomes tricky, because we’re going to see a rolling series of temporary vacancies on the Republican side.
There’s also the reality that if these Republican resignations continue past a certain date, it’ll get into the window where there are no special elections, and the seat will have to remain vacant until the November election.
Suffice it to say that if one more House Republican resigns before Gallagher’s seat can be filled, that may be the end of the House Republican majority. Will we end up seeing Speaker Hakeem Jeffries before November after all?
