Another House Republican just abruptly resigned
House Republicans just keep heading for the exits. There are a large number of non-retirement-age House Republicans who have announced that they’re retiring this year instead of seeking reelection. There are also a number of House Republicans who aren’t even waiting for November and are resigning right now.
This list now includes longtime House Republican Ken Buck. He had already decided to retire at the end of his term. But this afternoon he announced that he’s actually quitting next week. No reason was given. But perhaps he was simply exasperated at House Republicans’ bizarre Robert Hur hearing today, which was a waste of everyone’s time.
In any case, the House Republican majority is about to get even narrower next week. This is a group of House Republicans who couldn’t function back when they had a five seat majority. Now, depending on short term absences, they may be looking at a one seat majority as of next week.
This is why it’s so crucial that we put in the work and won last month’s special election to replace George Santos. Between flipping that seat and the sudden departure of Ken Buck, we could be just one more scandal or resignation away from the House majority being up for grabs.
