Alvin Bragg just played the Allen Weisselberg card against Donald Trump
A couple months ago Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg tipped off the media that he was still criminally investigating Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg, who was already in prison at the time. Then Donald Trump assigned a new paid attorney to Weisselberg, in an attempt at keeping Weisselberg from flipping on him. At the least, Trump’s move was a sign that he feared Weisselberg was in danger of flipping on him.
Then Weisselberg got out of prison last month, leading some observers to think that perhaps he was off the hook after all. But now Alvin Bragg (or someone around him) has tipped off the media that Weisselberg is indeed about to get criminally charged again. This time, the New York Times says, the charges could include perjury. So what’s going on here?
The point is not simply to put Weisselberg back in prison. He’s a pawn in all of this. The point is to twist the screws against Weisselberg in such a way that it cracks him, and prompts him to indeed flip on Donald Trump.
It appears Bragg has gone with the strategy of letting Weisselberg taste a few weeks of freedom and get acclimated to it, only to now threaten to throw him back into prison. If the thought of going back into the clink proves too much to bear, Weisselberg could indeed end up flipping.
With Donald Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial set for somewhere around the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024, Bragg has some time to try pressing different buttons in the name of eventually getting Weisselberg to flip. If Weisselberg does come around, it’ll increase the already very high odds that Trump will be convicted on the thirty-four felony counts he’s already been charged with. It would also allow Bragg to bring additional kinds of charges against Trump, such as insurance fraud and mortgage fraud, that might only stick with Weisselberg’s testimony.
