Donald Trump’s remaining allies hit the panic button after Robert Mueller’s press conference
This morning Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced his resignation. He also stressed, about as emphatically as a stoic DOJ type like him could manage, that he was unable to clear Donald Trump’s name – and that he only didn’t criminally indict Trump because he wasn’t allowed to. Mueller, in his own subtle and muted way, all but screamed for Trump’s impeachment. This left Trump and allies, well, simply screaming.
Donald Trump’s own reaction to the Mueller press conference was surreal yet predictable: he falsely claimed that Mueller had just exonerated him again. No one is buying that ridiculous lie outside of his base, but at this point it’s the only defense Trump has left. It turns out Trump’s remaining allies don’t have much of a defense strategy for him either.
For instance Newt Gingrich, who has been trying to find his way back into political relevance by buddying up to Donald Trump over the past couple years, couldn’t exactly get his point across after the press conference. The sheer illiteracy of Gingrich’s words is what immediately jumps out, but Newt’s message – or lack thereof – is the real story. To be clear, these glaring typos are his, not ours: “Muller tried today to have iut boith ways. If he thought President Trumpo was guilty of something he should have said he was guilty of something. Ken Starr used the word guilty 11 times on 11 different counts in his report on President Clinton. If not guilty Trump is innocent.” Yeah, nice try, Newt. He’s just making up a fictional version of the law here, to the point that we’re almost wondering if “Muller” and “Trumpo” aren’t typos so much as fictional characters.
Then there’s Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump’s personal attorney and fifth horcrux out of seven, who posted this bizarre legal gibberish: “A declination by any other name is a declination. Mueller’s statement just repeated his report there is no case, collusion or obstruction. Despite DOJ policy on charging, he used over 430 pages and a brief press statement to reach that result. No case!!!” When that’s all your criminal defense lawyer can come up with, you’re in some bad legal shape. Trump might as well get to work on that resignation plea deal now.
