All hell is breaking loose

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

From the start, it was shaping up to be a case of the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object. Donald Trump (because his life depends on it) and the Republican Senate (because their wealthy conservative donors demand it) have shown they’re willing to do nearly anything to put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. Democrats (because the future of democracy depends on it) have shown they’re willing to do nearly anything to derail Kavanaugh. But even we didn’t know it end up being this much of a spectacle.

Remember back when Democratic Senator Cory Booker was breaking all the rules to expose Brett Kavanaugh as a shady and duplicitous guy, and Republican Senator John Cornyn was threatening to have him thrown out of the Senate for it? That all now looks tame in comparison to what’s now playing out. Kavanaugh has now been accused of sexual assault and attempted rape. His accuser, who initially wanted to remain anonymous, has stepped out into the public light.

Now we’re watching the Republicans trip over each other’s shoelaces as they each stumble around trying to figure out how to survive this mess. They’re still, ostensibly, under orders from their billionaire puppet masters to approve Kavanaugh. But all that funding won’t do them any good when they’re up for reelection, if they’ve made themselves unelectable by putting an alleged rapist on the Supreme Court. One example made clear just how panicked and confused the GOP has become.

Hours after Christine Blasey Ford came forward, the Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans released a statement which essentially accused her of lying. Then Jeff Flake, a Republican Senator on that committee, announced that he’s not going to vote “yes” this week, because he wants to know more about Ford’s accusations. The GOP’s panic was no better personified than by Susan Collins, who nervously rambled about Kavanaugh while a CNN reporter stuck a microphone in her face while she was at the airport. All hell is breaking loose – and that’s just within the Republican ranks.
