Donald Trump has unhinged all-caps meltdown ahead of whistleblower testimony
Thirty-six hours into Donald Trump’s impeachment, and things are moving remarkably quickly. We already have a phone call summary which proves that Trump at least indirectly tried to use taxpayer money to extort the president of Ukraine into helping him alter the outcome of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Now we have multiple key Trump administration people testifying about the incident to Congress today, including the whistleblower.
The thing is, it’s not clear to what extent Donald Trump even understands that he’s being impeached. We’ve already seen his allies like GOP Congressman Doug Collins try to publicly make the case that this isn’t a real impeachment inquiry, as if they’re trying to convince Trump that none of what’s happening is happening. Trump’s tweets thus far this morning suggest that he’s unstably wavering back and forth between understanding and not understanding that he’s being impeached.
For instance, CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo tweeted this: “Stocks hit session lows after Pelosi calls for impeachment inquiry.” Trump then quoted this and added “If they actually did this the markets would crash.” Wait, a minute – if they did this? He’s seemingly talking as if the impeachment inquiry is just a hoax, Nancy Pelosi is only pretending to impeach him. After all, he did claim yesterday that Pelosi is “no longer Speaker of the House,” so he may now be in a place where he just believes whatever he wishes were true, and he thinks that makes it true.
But Donald Trump also spent much of the morning ranting in all capital letters in unhinged fashion, suggesting that there are moments when he does understand how much trouble he’s in: “THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO DESTROY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND ALL THAT IT STANDS FOR. STICK TOGETHER, PLAY THEIR GAME, AND FIGHT HARD REPUBLICANS. OUR COUNTRY IS AT STAKE!”
