Robert Mueller sounds the final all-call
It’s now or never. That’s the message sent out by Special Counsel Robert Mueller yesterday, with a stunning series of moves as he escalates the Trump-Russia investigation and approaches Donald Trump’s doorstep. Mueller indicted thirteen Russians who conspired to rig the election in Trump’s favor. That’s a massive, history-making development in its own right, but it was far from the only major move Mueller made yesterday. He’s making it abundantly clear that the door is about to slam shut on anyone who doesn’t want to hurry up and switch sides.
Here are some of the other moves that Mueller has made in the past forty-eight hours: He’s conducted a proffer interview with Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates. He’s used the evidence from Gates to go back into court and try to bury Paul Manafort. He’s interviewed Trump’s former legal spokesman Mark Corallo, who testified that he witnessed current Trump Communications Director Hope Hicks obstructing justice. He’s interviewed Steve Bannon who, according to NBC News, spent twenty hours helpfully answering every one of Mueller’s questions about Trump and Russia.
This is just the stuff we know about. Every few hours, Mueller lets the media have yet another piece of the puzzle, spelling out just how rigged the election was, just how guilty Trump and his co-conspirators are, and just how screwed they are if they don’t hurry up and cut plea deals of their own. Mueller, rather obviously, has what he needs to complete the job.
Robert Mueller is sounding the final all-call for anyone out there who committed a crime in relation to the Trump-Russia scandal, and who wants to try to gain some last minute leniency by flipping on a bigger fish. But at this late date, with Mueller having already stacked the deck, no one else is getting a deal unless they have compelling evidence to offer. All the leverage is on Mueller’s side. For everyone else, it’s their last chance to avoid rotting in prison.
