We already know that Donald Trump is petrified of a legitimate Senate impeachment trial, complete with witnesses testifying about his crimes. It’s not difficult to understand why, as the likes of John Bolton could finish off what’s left of his failing presidency. Now Trump is giving away that he’s afraid of something else: having a trial at all. Check out this surreal new Trump tweet:

Many believe that by the Senate giving credence to a trial based on the no evidence, no crime, read the transcripts, “no pressure” Impeachment Hoax, rather than an outright dismissal, it gives the partisan Democrat Witch Hunt credibility that it otherwise does not have. I agree!

He’s not demanding that his Senate impeachment trial have no witnesses. He’s demanding that the trial not take place at all. He wants the Senate to summarily dismiss the charges, as opposed to a trial. To be clear, this won’t happen. It would look so bad, moderate voters would end up punishing Republican Senators in 2020, and Mitch McConnell isn’t stupid enough to make such an obvious mistake.

But the real revelation here is that Donald Trump is afraid of a Senate trial taking place at all. The only reason for Trump to fear a trial is if he thinks it could end up spiraling out of control, which is to say that once the trial becomes a reality, some GOP Senators could panic and start calling for witnesses, or something along those lines. Keep an eye on this, because Trump really seems to be worried about what’ll happen once the Senate trial can of worms is opened.
