How Robert Mueller made himself invincible against Donald Trump
For the past several months, the mainstream media has periodically tried to convince us that Donald Trump was going to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller any minute now. This hype always turned out to be baseless, and little more than a ratings ploy during any given slow news week. But at this point the media isn’t even bothering to try selling the hype about Trump firing Mueller. There’s a reason for that: Mueller has managed to make himself invincible.
The remarkable part is how Robert Mueller managed to pull it off. You only need to look at one example to see how Mueller made it happen. Now that Donald Trump’s new “attorney” Rudy Giuliani has confessed that Trump did reimburse his other supposed “attorney” Michael Cohen for the payoff to Stormy Daniels, the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York is going to end up seeking an interview with Trump.
Let that sink in. Even as Donald Trump is going to theatrical and hysterical lengths to try to avoid sitting down for an inevitable interview with Robert Mueller, he’s now facing the prospect of also having to sit down with some other federal prosecutor in New York. Even if Trump begins gutting the Department of Justice in the hope of finding someone willing to fire Mueller for him, what good would it do him? Trump would still be stuck facing off with other federal prosecutors. Of course Trump is only in this situation because Mueller created this situation.
Robert Mueller decided not to claim jurisdiction over the federal investigation into Michael Cohen, and instead passed it on to the SDNY. By yielding his own power to his allies, Mueller has ensured that the overall federal investigation into Trump’s crimes is now in the hands of too many entities for Trump to be able to fire his way out of it.
