Rudy Giuliani appeared on Fox News on Wednesday and confessed that Donald Trump committed crimes ranging from an illegal election payoff to obstruction of justice. After everyone watching was appropriately stunned at what they’d just seen, Giuliani then insisted that Trump had given him the greenlight to admit these things. If that’s true, it means we’re looking at an instance of someone truly snowing the snowman.

Giuliani is a former prosecutor. He knows how the law works. He knows full well that he just helped shove Donald Trump out the White House back door. On the other hand, Trump has no idea how the law works, he has no interest in learning, and he generally takes the advice of anyone who blows enough smoke up his backside. So it’s not difficult to figure out what’s going on here. Rudy has conned Trump into getting on board with his own demise.

So if you were expecting Trump to wake up and launch into a Twitter tirade which refutes Giuliani’s confession, or wake up and just fire Giuliani from his legal team altogether, don’t bet on it. Trump is on board with this freak show. Rudy has convinced him that this is somehow the best legal strategy when it’s actually the worst possible legal strategy, and Trump is gullible enough to believe him.

We’ve talked about the various possible motivations for why Rudy Giuliani is trying to take Donald Trump down, with the most likely being that Rudy is hoping Trump’s ouster from office will prevent the Trump-Russia investigation from ever reaching Rudy for his role in it. But make no mistake about what you’re seeing here: Rudy is playing Trump for a fool here. The shark has convinced the clownfish to let it eat him.
