Donald Trump prepares to go through with his dumbest mistake yet

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Objectively speaking, Donald Trump has made a whole lot of dumb mistakes since taking office, considering his historically low approval rating, his near total lack of legislative accomplishments, and his worsening criminal scandals. You almost have to be trying to screw up for things to consistently go that badly. Now it turns out Trump is preparing to go through with what would be, by far, his dumbest mistake yet.

Donald Trump has begun jettisoning everyone around him who doesn’t kiss his backside or inflate his ego. That’s included his head lawyer in the Trump-Russia scandal, John Dowd. Although Trump’s legal team has made one mistake after another, and Dowd has been as prone to those mistakes as anyone, Dowd at least had the sense to try to convince Trump not to sit down for an interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Now that Trump has pushed Dowd into resigning, Trump is predictably preparing to sit down with Mueller.

Trump is now making preparations for a potential interview with Mueller, according to a new report from CNN. If Trump were anyone else, it might be a smart move for him to go through with the interview. But because Trump is Trump, and he alternates between pathologically lying to try to impress people and blurting out secrets to try to impress people, he’ll end up either incriminating himself or perjuring himself. Trump will he handing himself to Mueller on a silver platter.

In fairness, Donalds Trump doesn’t have any good options here. If he refuses to do the interview, Robert Mueller can have a judge compel Trump to go through with the interview. At that point Trump would have to plead the Fifth, which would destroy him politically. But that would be a better fate than destroying himself criminally. Trump can’t win here – but he’s leaning toward the path of losing the most. Contribute to Palmer Report
