Mentally incompetent Donald Trump flip-flops on nuclear arms race

Last night, the Saturday Night Live version of Donald Trump quipped that it didn’t matter that he was taking health insurance away from thirty million Americans, because with him in charge of the United States, “we’re all going to die” anyway. This evening, not to be outdone, the real Donald Trump delivered the kind of abrupt flip-flop on nuclear weapons which suggests he’s lost all mental capacity.

Just three weeks ago, Trump caused millions of Americans to seriously ask themselves if they should be trying to construct nuclear fallout shelters when he tweeted that “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes.” It set off a national panic about whether Trump truly was willing to put the world on the brink of nuclear armageddon. But now he’s changed his policy in a manner which suggests something even more alarming.

In a new interview with the London Times, Donald Trump is now insisting that “nuclear weapons should be way down and reduced very substantially.” The quote appears to have been delivered with such a lack of context that Reuters couldn’t even build a story around it, and instead simply published a two sentence story before apparently just giving up trying to figure out what was going on.

And so now, in a span of around twenty-one days, the “president elect” of the United States has made a point of stating that he wants to greatly expand our nuclear arsenal and greatly reduce it. This isn’t an issue that one flip-flops on at will. Instead, this about face suggests that Donald Trump lacks the mental capacity to recall what his own position even is, on an issue which will indeed get us all killed if he gets it wrong.
