Special Counsel Robert Mueller is hellbent on making sure that everyone who participated in the Trump-Russia scandal, or even tried to obstruct the Trump-Russia investigation, pays some kind of price for it. We saw this when Mueller gave significant prison time to Rick Gates even after Gates agreed to fully cooperate. We saw it again when Mueller indicted an attorney barely involved in the scandal, simply for having misled investigators. Then there’s the odd case of George Nader.

Here’s what we know about George Nader: he was indicted on child porn charges decades ago (though he was not convicted and he denies the charges), and he appears to be connected to some of the world’s shadiest of illegitimate political regimes. He’s also the only person known to have been given immunity in the Trump-Russia scandal by Robert Mueller. As far as slime goes, you can’t get much slimier than Nader. Yet Mueller has decided that Nader is the one guy who’s going to get a free pass for his role in the Trump-Russia scandal, even as everyone else is being sized up for prison uniforms.

That alone has to be enough to scare Donald Trump. Whatever this Nader character knows about the actions of Donald Trump and their mutual associates, it’s important enough for Mueller to be willing to hold his nose and work with him, instead of seizing the opportunity to use the Trump-Russia scandal to send this scumbag to prison. It’s what a competent prosecutor does when his real goal is to take down the kingpin of the criminal operation. Back in his prosecutorial days, Robert Mueller let mass murderer Sammy The Bull Gravano serve a mere five years in prison in exchange for his cooperation. It’s how Mueller took down kingpin John Gotti and the Gambino crime family. It’s just how these things work.

But the real question here is why Donald Trump is so afraid of George Nader, he hasn’t even bothered to try to publicly discredit him. We’ve seen Trump try to diminish the roles that George Papadopoulos and Paul Manafort played in his campaign once they became centerpieces in the Trump-Russia criminal investigation. We’ve seen Trump try to destroy Andrew McCabe simply for being a witness to Trump’s obstruction of justice. Yet Trump is too afraid to say anything about Nader. It’s likely for the same reason Mueller wanted Nader as a witness so badly: Nader is shady enough to know where all of Trump’s bodies are buried, and that has Trump too afraid to even speak his name.

By the way, immunity doesn’t mean that George Nader won’t end up behind bars. Robert Mueller is simply declining to prosecute Nader for whatever role he played in the Trump-Russia scandal, which appears to have consisted of little more than setting up an illegal meeting. This doesn’t mean prosecutors can’t target Nader for other crimes he may have committed. If he’s been living a life of crime, he’ll end up in prison one way or the other when this is all said and done.
