It’s officially called President’s Day in some states, and Presidents’ Day in other states, and while some within the Resistance are wasting their time inaccurately trying to nitpick headline writers over it, the rest of us are trying to figure out what to do about a President’s Day with no President. Two days ago we got grand jury confirmation that the person occupying the the office of President of the United States wasn’t actually elected, and instead conspired with a foreign enemy to rig the election. Now what?
Perhaps we need the arrival of this holiday for mainstream Americans to be reminded that Donald Trump is absolutely not the President of the United States. He’s a traitor who’s illegally occupying the office, and he’ll die in prison for it. The tricky part is figuring out how to oust the traitor from the office while keeping our centuries old democracy intact. If George Washington were around, he’d condemn the Republican Party for refusing to impeach and remove him, and then he’d go back and write the Constitution so that a traitor like Trump could never get this far with his war against the United States.

But that’s a mere fantasy, and while the Constitution will have to be changed in the wake of Trump’s successful treasonous plot to seize the White House, that’s not going to help us today. It’s clear by now that unless Trump’s approval rating drops into the twenties, the Republicans are going to sit on their hands through the midterm elections. That leaves us with only the option of putting all our efforts into ensuring the Democrats take the majorities in the House and Senate so that due process can be carried out against Trump.

Of course in the mean time Special Counsel Robert Mueller continues to dismantle Donald Trump’s illegal faux-presidency, in both the legal and political sense. If Mueller can use overwhelming force to push Trump out of office before the midterms, we might end up having a holiday named after him. In the mean time, tomorrow is President’s Day, and it’s a reminder that there is no President of the United States. This will end with Trump in a cell, but we still have to do the political legwork to help make it happen. The midterm congressional elections in November are now the real President’s Day.
