The media is at it again

After some stinging setbacks in November, a lot of Democrats are asking each other about what in particular went wrong – and how they can right the ship before the next batch of elections come at us. This has led to both some decent introspection on messaging as well as some overanalysis on how to improve. If you were curious where the media is focusing, look to Kristen Welker on Meet the Press – or better yet, don’t.

Shortly after the swearing in of the 119th Congress, Chuck Schumer, now the minority leader of Senate Democrats, appeared on Meet the Press where he was asked by Welker about where his party stood on President Biden and the president’s decision to run for re-election. Seriously. If you had any doubts of whether the media is still upset about the president’s decision to run in 2024, you’ve got your answer – five months after he made his decision.

The only reason the interview is worth repeating, is because Schumer gave the right answer. Rather than speculate on what might have been, he clarified that Democrats never lied about the president’s mental acuity and he pointed right to Biden’s record that the media has largely refused to report on:

“He’s had an amazing record. The legislation we passed, one of the most significant groups of legislation since the New Deal – since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, putting in 235 judges, a record. And he’s a patriot. He’s a great guy.”

Welker isn’t acting alone – like the rest of the media, she’s coming around to realizing that Donald Trump’s incoming agenda is incredibly unpopular, and his mandate non-existent, which is why she’s doubling down on the same thing that caused so much blowback against the media to begin with. This is precisely why the Sunday talk shows don’t deserve your viewership as long as they stick their heads in the sand.
