Donald Trump gets desperate as his Matt Gaetz nomination flounders
The Republican Senate signaled that it wanted to rubber stamp Trump’s nominees as recess appointments, but then Trump turned around and completely blew it by nominating high profile disasters like Matt Gaetz. Trump was supposed to pick low profile corrupt sycophants who could be confirmed without anyone knowing. Instead he picked an alleged child sex trafficker, and to the surprise of no one but Trump, it’s going poorly for him.
Now Trump is getting desperate. It turns out he’s begun calling Republican Senators individually and begging them to support the Gaetz nomination. There’s no predicting which way any of this will go. But if these Republican Senators were inclined to just give Trump what he wants, he wouldn’t need to be calling and begging them. This is clearly going to be a difficult internal battle between Trump and the Republican Senate, which is the very last thing that Trump needs right now.
We’ll see what happens. But so far Trump is blowing it. Royally. What kind of senile idiot gets a free pass to put almost anyone in his cabinet he wants, and then blows it by picking one of the very few people he should have known he couldn’t get a free pass on.
