The tables have turned
Last month I pointed to polling which showed that Donald Trump only had about a 6% lead over Kamala Harris on the issue of immigration and the border. I said this was a win for Harris. Why? When a candidate goes all-in on an issue and talks about it constantly, like Trump has with his racist immigration tirades, some dummies in the middle just assume that candidate has to be better on that issue because that candidate is more focused on that issue.
To make an issue the centerpiece of your campaign, and to only be leading on that issue by six points, is a disaster. It would be like if Kamala Harris, after all of her focus on abortion rights, were only leading Trump by six points on the abortion issue (recent polling has her ahead of Trump by more than twenty points on abortion). The bottom line is that Trump’s main issue focus isn’t getting him very far.
If immigration is Trump’s most-referenced issue, then inflation is Trump’s second-most referenced issue. But new polling from Cook Political says that Trump and Harris are now tied on inflation and the economy. Trump had been six points ahead on the issue, but now that lead has been erased.
This means that of the two key issues Trump has staked himself to, he’s only ahead by six points on one and he’s tied on the other. In other words, Trump’s rhetoric on immigration and inflation isn’t working. He’s laughably full of crap on these two issues, and he’s being blatantly racist when it comes to immigration, and the numbers suggest that persuadable voters in the middle aren’t falling for it.
