In the wake of Hurricane Helene over the weekend, a lot of bad faith actors both on the right and the performative far-left accused the Biden administration of neglecting North Carolina which was hit with flooding just before the storm broke. This is, of course, nonsense that can be easily debunked, as the administration approved federal aid for emergencies in both North Carolina and Georgia days ago and both President Biden and Vice President Harris will likely tour the devastation in the days to come. What’s important for now is that aid makes its way to where it’s needed and search and rescue for potential survivors can be carried out, while also restoring power and drinking water.

Generally, it is customary for streets to be open for evacuation and for the flow of aid in the aftermath of a natural disaster like a hurricane – things that become significantly more complicated when political figures are touring the area who then need a security detail. Donald Trump, however, cares much more about the optics and how he looks during a disaster as opposed to the people whose lives have been impacted, which is why he vowed to travel to Georgia on Monday.

Rather than a warm reception, the former guy appeared before a small crowd mostly mumbling from some prepared remarks. It’s hardly news any more that he lies – that’s pretty much every time he talks – but – he managed to not just lie about the government’s response – he was called out on it by Georgia’s Republican governor after he spoke. It’s an especially bad look for the former guy, whose own Project 2025 would thoroughly cut funding for natural disasters – storms conceivably worse than Helene. This reason alone is why Donald Trump should never be trusted with the presidency. Let’s do everything we can to elect Kamala Harris president on Nov 5.
