Talk about an October surprise

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump has been facing so much bad political news of late – his disastrous debate, his sinking polls, his incoherent rallies, his failing running mate – it’s caused his legal troubles to largely fall out of the headlines. But his legal troubles haven’t gone away. In fact they’re set to get worse for him in the coming month.

This week Jack Smith made a lengthy and still-sealed updated filing in the January 6th federal criminal case against Donald Trump. This prompted Judge Tanya Chutkan to announce an October timeframe for the redacted filing to be made public. This means that new evidence against Trump in his criminal plot to overthrow the 2020 election will surface just a few weeks before the 2024 election.

Meanwhile Donald Trump’s appeal of his half billion dollar verdict in the Letitia James case has quietly begun in New York appeals court. There’s no news coming out of it so far, but that’ll change soon enough. Trump could end up losing his appeal, and finally being on the hook for asset seizure, just before the election as well.

I still won’t be surprised if we end up looking back at Kamala Harris’ July entry into the race as the big “October surprise” of the 2024 election. But it’s now looking like Donald Trump could be facing one or more “October surprises” in October, thanks to the fact that his legal troubles never really did go away.
