Eric Adams must resign
Innocent until proven guilty? Sure. But still — Eric Adams must resign. It is a day of sadness for New York City. After all, it’s not every day that their mayor gets criminally indicted. Such a thing has in fact, never happened before. Adams professes his innocence. Good. One would expect him to mount a robust defense if he’s innocent.
That doesn’t matter right now in terms of the right thing to do. Whether guilty or innocent, Adams must resign. He must resign because it’s the right thing for a beautiful city with enough problems. This scandal that engulfs Adams will only get worse, a drip-drop, drip-drop of water that will soon turn into a deluge and Adams must know it.
He must resign. Politicians often have a tough time putting the American people – the ones they profess to serve – before themselves. Joe Biden did it with grace.
So must Eric Adams. He’ll have his day in court. Meanwhile, the city that never sleeps needs competent and commanding leadership from someone who is not tinted with the glaze of suspected criminal activity.
He must resign.
Peacocks proudly strut, plumage bright and colorful, and all eyes are usually upon them when they come out to play. Many of our leaders are like these peacocks. Leaders like to strut, and to be seen to get their egos stroked in a multitude ways by both friends and foes alike. It is one of the sad realities of politics.
And when these same leaders get indicted they all say the same thing: I didn’t do it. Really. Have you ever seen ONE indicted politician who stepped up to the Mic and said, “Guilty!!’
I am not saying that Adams is. I AM saying it’s time to put away the vanity and do what’s best for your city. If he doesn’t — he will be forced out, that I’m sure of. It would be better if he modestly and gracefully resigned. But you know what? Grace is often hard to find in politics. President Biden is the gold standard where GRACE is concerned. Does Adams have it in him? I’m not so sure. But we are about to soon find out.
