Another blow for Donald Trump in North Carolina

When Mark Robinson imploded, everyone sort of instinctively understood that it was going to harm Donald Trump’s chances of winning North Carolina. But how was that specifically going to play out? That’s a longer and more complicated answer, with some of it being unpredictable.

But now we’re starting to see some of those specifics indeed play out. For instance the Republican Governors Association just pulled the plug on all of its planned advertising in North Carolina, with the logic being that since Robinson is going to lose anyway, there’s no point in wasting the money. That advertising was aimed at driving votes for Robinson, but was also going to help drive votes for Trump. If you manage to convince a conservative extremist voter to turn out for someone lower down on the ticket, they’re likely to also vote for the extremist at the top of the ticket as well.

And so we’re now starting to see a clear path for how Robinson’s implosion is costing Donald Trump votes in North Carolina. How many or how few votes? That remains to be seen, and is indeed unpredictable. But when you consider that the presidential contest in North Carolina could easily come down to one percent of the vote or less, something like the RGA pulling all its ads could indeed make a difference in the outcome.
