Donald Trump’s babysitters have mostly been keeping him off the campaign trail of late, perhaps figuring that there’s no point in sending him to swing states if he’s just going to talk about sharks and batteries the entire time. Trump’s people are putting him out there for isolated interviews with friendly outlets, but even that’s going poorly for him.

This week Trump was asked if he would sign or veto a nationwide abortion ban if it reached his desk. He tried to evade the question. When pushed, he flat out said “I don’t want to answer that.” That’s… not the right answer. Trump doesn’t seem to have any idea where to park himself on this issue. He needs to take anti-abortion stances in order to keep his evangelical base happy. But he’s afraid to say as much, because he knows that a large majority of undecided and moderate voters are pro-choice.

Trump is now too spun around to take a firm position on just about any issue. He’s suddenly pro-IVF but he’s anti-abortion. Except now he doesn’t want to admit he’s anti-abortion. And no one believes he’s pro-IVF. This is a tailspin. It’s what happens when you fall behind in an election and you have no idea how to stop the political bleeding. It’s also what happens when a candidate is too senile to figure out how to get himself out of the holes he keeps digging.
