On Wednesday, Tim Walz kicked off the morning by giving a speech to firefighters in Boston before joining Vice President Harris on a bus tour through the swing state of Georgia. The speech wasn’t an official campaign event, but as he spoke, the vice presidential hopeful had some choice words to describe his 2024 political opponents – a sentiment that we’re likely to see echo on the campaign trail in the days to come.

The GOP likes to pretend that somehow it’s the party of the working class – a trope that’s actually offensive, as it makes the assumption that working class people are dumb and bigoted by nature, with Republicans hoping to capitalize on that bigotry for votes – even while doing nothing that will actually improve their lives. Republicans and their donors couldn’t be further out of touch from these people if they tried.

When Walz came to Boston, he decided to set the record straight: “The only thing these guys [Trump and Vance] know about working people, is how to take advantage of them.” It was a reminder that Donald Trump’s presidency was one of the most hostile on record to workers – denying them the power of collective bargaining while using right to work laws to deny them pensions and safe working conditions. This was also the trajectory Republicans were taking America on before Donald Trump got involved in politics.

The disparity couldn’t be more different: Kamala Harris and Tim Walz believe in the dignity of work, whereas the former guy and his party only see workers’ rights as an impediment to making more money. This is yet another reason why we need to get them both elected on Nov 5 along with a Democratic trifecta.
