The real danger here

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

When I was a young girl, I was lulled into sleep by the flickering of airport lights over mountains near the lovely place that was my home. As an adult, I often fell asleep to the reassuring sounds of the train whizzing down the tracks. I have always preferred noise to quiet when falling asleep.

But lately, something has been keeping me up at night occasionally, a thought that I need to share with all of you since it has to do with politics. It’s the worry that glints in my head, blinking, calling to me. This is NOT a worry about Donald Trump stealing the election.

It’s NOT a worry about the election not being certified. It’s — it’s complacency. Complacency and resting on our laurels. Do you know how easy it would be? I see it, my friends, constantly. People are so happy, and I get that, I do.

But happy trails sometimes lead one down the wrong path, especially if one does not have one’s compass with them. The bottom line is I do not like seeing messages from people saying, “We’ve already won.” No, no, no, we haven’t! We must do the work first; then, we can savor the satisfaction. Not until then.

This article is a call to activism not just for Palmer Report readers but also for their friends and families and to anyone who knows what a fragile strand of pearls democracy really is. Everyone has to do the work, to put every fiber of their being into this, because we have not won anything yet.

Politics is a fickle friend, whispering in our ears one day and then with the rival team the next. It’s imperative that NOBODY get complacent. Ugh, that word! I despise even the SOUND of that most unattractive word, complacent. So let’s NOT do that, and let’s gear up because the following weeks will require URGENCY, and we must give it our all.
