Score one for Joe Biden
As President Biden campaigns for reelection, he has achieved another first. The largest union representing workers at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has broken precedent and endorsed a presidential candidate. Representing over 8,000 members, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE)-Council 238 announced on Tuesday that it is supporting Biden for the 2024 election.
Biden’s latest endorsement reflects his proven commitment to science-based policies, environmental protection, and strengthening federal agencies. Unlike the Trump administration, Biden’s unwavering environmental advocacy has led to the prioritizing of combating climate change, investing in clean energy, and undoing the environmental rollbacks of the Republican agenda under Trump.
By contrast, endorsing Trump would mean more of the same: rolling back environmental regulations, sidelining scientific experts, and slashing the EPA’s budget and staffing levels. Essentially, it would mean putting the planet on a fast track toward “catastrophic” destruction.
In addition to Biden’s dedication to protecting the environment, his support for federal workers is key. As AFGE-Council 238 President Marie Owens Powell pointed out, “President Biden understands the importance of federal employees and the work we do.” She added that the Biden administration “has taken steps to restore respect and integrity to the EPA, ensuring we have the resources and support needed to do our jobs effectively.”
Finally, in announcing the groundbreaking endorsement, the union also emphasized the positive impact of Biden’s policies on workplace conditions and labor rights. Thanks to Biden’s pro-union efforts, there have been significant improvements in labor relations while empowering federal employees.
As the November election inches closer, this endorsement is a win for the Biden campaign as well as for Americans who are concerned about what Trump and his minions would do when it comes to the environment, if given a second chance. As with many areas, the contrast between Biden and Trump when it comes to the environment is stark. With the planet’s future at stake, it’s no wonder the EPA’s largest union broke precedent to make its first-ever political endorsement. The Union will soon launch an education campaign to help spread the message and get more Americans voting for Biden this November.
