The United States Constitution has always barred anyone from taking on any title of royalty, but someone may have forgotten to tell Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus. He sent out a Christmas message in which he appeared to refer to Donald Trump as the “new King.” After widespread backlash and condemnation across social media, Priebus is now backtracking, while Trump’s team is naturally blaming those who dared to point it out to begin with.

Priebus, who is currently RNC Chair and is on track to become Donald Trump’s White House Chief of Staff, sent out the following Christmas message on behalf of the RNC: “Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind. Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King.”

It’s the “this Christmas” and “new King” in the same sentence that have gotten Priebus in trouble, in a seemingly obvious reference to Donald Trump currently being on the verge of taking office and effectively taking over the United States. But now he’s insisting to CNN that he was in fact referring to Christ, even though the RNC Christmas message he sent out last year made no mention of any “King” one way or the other.

Now that Priebus has been caught rather blatantly trying to politicize Christmas on behalf of his boss Donald Trump, other members of Trump’s team are try to deflect the blame. For instance Trump’s White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who also just became Communications Director when the person tapped for that role quit after just two days, is now blaming Trump’s detractors for the fact that Priebus referred to Trump as the new King.
