When Special Counsel Jack Smith filed to modify the conditions of Donald Trump’s release in order to prevent him from attacking law enforcement, it appeared Smith was trying to corner Judge Aileen Cannon. If she refused to take the correct action, Smith would be able to use the dire nature of the matter to get her removed from the case. It’s all a good reminder that Cannon is in way over her head. Now Trump’s attorneys in the case are reminding us that they are too.

Trump’s attorneys have now responded by asking that Jack Smith be held in contempt just for having made such a filing. Moreover, they’re asking that Smith be held in contempt in civil court, even though this is a criminal case being tried in criminal court.

People on social media are already trying to spin this as some kind of secret evil genius master plan on the part of Trump’s attorneys to magically delay everything forever. But in reality this is just plain incompetence on their part – and bad strategy. If Cannon still fails to respond appropriately to Jack Smith’s filing, even after Trump’s attorneys replied to it with legal gibberish, it’ll just make it that much easier for Smith to convince the 11th Circuit that Cannon isn’t up to the job.

What we’re seeing from Trump’s attorneys is what we keep seeing from Trump’s various attorneys in his various cases: they have absolutely no idea how to help their very guilty and very senile client, and so they’re just doing pointless things like this to keep him happy.
