When Donald Trump’s attorneys filed a request earlier today to block Karen McDougal from testifying, I pointed out that there was zero chance the judge would grant this. But now, in a remarkable development, prosecutors just announced that they do not intend to call McDougal. So what’s going on here?

In short, it means that the prosecution now feels that it already has everything it needs from the Stormy Daniels testimony and such. Alvin Bragg and his team have run up the score so thoroughly, there’s no reason to put unnecessary witnesses on the stand – and McDougal’s testimony isn’t necessary.

Given that today’s witnesses included a Harper Collins executive and a bookkeeper, there are potentially still plenty more witnesses for the prosecution to come. And as of now there’s still every reason to expect that Michael Cohen will testify, as his testimony is central to the criminal charges at hand. But by deciding not to put McDougal on the stand, the prosecution is signaling that it already has a slam dunk against Trump.
