John McCain joins with Democrats to stick it to Donald Trump
John McCain has clearly had enough of Donald Trump’s crap. This was a long time coming, based on how Trump has treated McCain over the past two years. But at this point, with McCain facing mortality and potentially running out of time, he seems intent on helping to unravel Trump’s illegitimate presidency. In his latest effort to that end, McCain has signed on with the Democrats to back Trump into an impossible position.
Democratic Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mark Warner crafted a bill which would require disclosures about political advertising money spent on digital networks like Facebook, Google, and Twitter. The bill is officially aimed at preventing another election from being hijacked by foreign advertising dollars – but it’s also aimed at reminding the public that the Donald Trump campaign and Russia used this kind of advertising to rig the election in Trump’s favor.
Now John McCain has signed onto the bill, officially making it bipartisan in nature (link). This significantly increases the odds that it’ll pass the Republican-controlled Senate and House. That sets up a situation where Trump will either have to humiliate himself (and anger his boss Vladimir Putin) by signing the bill, or paint himself as guilty by vetoing it. It represents the third time this week in which McCain has found a way to stick it to Trump.
Earlier this week John McCain was given the Liberty Medal, and he used his acceptance speech to condemn Donald Trump as “half baked” and “unpatriotic.” Yesterday, McCain also began publicly asking hard questions about why the Trump administration is refusing to be forthcoming about the fatally failed U.S. military operation in Niger – which could end up being Trump’s biggest scandal to date. We’re still hoping McCain brings himself to speak the word “impeachment” soon, as it could fundamentally alter the entire current political landscape.
