Over the past year-plus, House Republicans have repeatedly threatened to shut down the government only to cave at the last minute. This was all easily predictable, because the House Republicans in toss-up districts are afraid that a shutdown would harm their reelection prospects. There just aren’t the votes for a shutdown.

House Republicans caved yet again today, approving a temporary budget deal that keeps the government open and gives Democrats much of what they wanted. When former Speaker Kevin McCarthy allowed this to happen, the insurrectionist House Republicans ousted him or it. New Speaker Mike Johnson has also allowed this to happen a few times and survived it. But that may have just changed.

Marjorie Taylor Greene reportedly just filed a resolution with the House parliamentarian – which could well be a motion to vacate. Given how small and unstable the House Republican majority has become, if Mike Johnson is indeed ousted as Speaker, it could be almost impossible for Republicans to elect anyone to replace him. Stay tuned. We’ll see how far the insurrectionist caucus takes its antics this time. Are we finally about to see Speaker Hakeem Jeffries?
