The Hunter Biden probe has officially blown up in Republicans’ faces

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

When a Special Counsel is appointed to investigate an actual criminal scandal, such as Jack Smith’s investigation into Donald Trump, the result ends up speaking for itself. Smith doesn’t have to worry about justifying the existence of his probe, because it’s resulted in rock solid criminal cases against the main investigative target.

But when a Special Counsel is appointed to investigate a “scandal” that ends up not really being one, we see time and again that it tends to go completely sideways. At some point the Special Counsel starts to worry about the probe being seen as a waste of time and money, and often ends up feeling compelled to do something.

For instance, after Trump-appointed Special Counsel John Durham failed to find any evidence that the Feds were unfairly targeting Donald Trump, Durham tried to justify his own existence by putting some minor players on trial on ridiculous charges. And after the Special Counsel investigating Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents couldn’t find anything, he tried to justify his probe’s existence by inserting some idiotic personal attacks against Biden into the final report.

Then there’s the investigation into Hunter Biden. Once it became clear that there was no connection between Hunter Biden’s alleged crimes and Joe Biden, the Special Counsel then over-charged Hunter Biden to try to justify his probe’s existence. But because the probe has largely been a bust, the Special Counsel is also trying to cover his tracks by indicting the witness who told him the phony stories about Hunter Biden and Joe Biden to begin with.

If this witness did indeed tell phony stories to federal investigators, then he deserves to be indicted. Good. But the kicker is that this just so happens to be the same witness that House Republicans like James Comer were hyping all along as supposedly having the proof that Joe Biden is corrupt. And now this witness is going on criminal trial for having made the whole thing up. Ouch.

This is an instance of a Special Counsel working politically against the Republicans for once. If this DOJ criminal investigation had never happened to begin with, House Republicans could have simply put this witness in front of the TV cameras and made bank on his false claims about Joe Biden. But with this witness now officially busted for having made it all up, House Republicans have nothing left to work with.

Although this one worked in our favor, it’s really time for this era of “everyone gets a Special Counsel” to end. Jack Smith is doing the lord’s work. But these other Special Counsels have all been investigating politically charged scandals that everyone knew from the start were either fake or exaggerated. And in each instance these Special Counsels have then gone overboard trying to justify their own existence. Enough. Once Jack Smith’s work is complete, I don’t want to hear the words “Special Counsel” again for a long time.
