Donald Trump’s “very weak” Supreme Court appeal just landed in the dumpster
Now that the U.S. Court of Appeals has made very clear that Donald Trump has no “presidential immunity” case whatsoever, Trump is firing off his last blank, so to speak. Today he asked the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that he does have immunity.
While no one trusts this Supreme Court to do the right thing, it does typically do the self-interested thing. Since the Supreme Court keeps declining to help Trump with his criminal problems, there’s no reason to expect that it’ll bail Trump out this time. It’s made even worse for Trump by the fact that he has no case at all.
It’s not that Trump has a weak case. He has literally no case. “I am magically immune because I want to be” is no more a legal argument than “I can flap my arms and fly because I want to.” To that end, Trump’s Supreme Court filing today is a laugh out loud joke that feels like his attorneys randomly found it in a dumpster, tried to clean the grime off it, and handed it in.
That’s not a surprise. When you start with Trump having no case, you throw in the fact that his attorneys haven’t been able to come up with a single win for him yet, and you end with the fact that Trump is too senile to steer his attorneys in the right direction anyway, it’s all a recipe for disaster.
To that end, legal expert Neal Katyal referred to Trump’s filing today as “very weak.” Other legal experts are similarly unimpressed. Not only is Trump very likely to lose this Supreme Court appeal, he’s likely to lose it rather quickly. Then his Washington DC criminal trial will start. Bring it on.
