When the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the matter of Donald Trump’s claim of presidential immunity this week, it meant the U.S. Court of Appeals will make the ruling. The Supreme Court can then take up the case if it wants, but the Supreme Court seems to have no interest in getting involved at all. So if Trump loses the U.S. Court of Appeals ruling, his trial will likely remain on track to happen on time.

To that end, Trump just made his filing in the case, and it’s total junk. Trump and his attorneys would have needed to come up with a surprisingly savvy argument in order to have any chance of winning the appeals court case, or to even drag it out. But the garbage filing Trump just made in the case means that he’s going to lose it, and lose quickly.

There is every reason to expect that Trump will lose in the U.S. Court of Appeals approximately three weeks from now. Then if the Supreme Court once again declines to take up the case, we’ll be on to Trump’s federal criminal trial. Stay tuned.
